The death record of Joseph states that he was a son of John Adams & Nellie Crosby. This information was probably obtained from his son Albra, who took over the family farm. Albra probably never knew his grandparents, so I think their names may not be correct on this record. I can find no John Adams with a wife named Nellie Crosby. However, from what he did remember, it is most likely that his grandmother "Nellie" was Eleanor Crosby, wife of William Adams. William Adams died before 1850, but Eleanor died after the 1860 census of Caratunk. Joseph's middle name was probably Crosby, after his mother's maiden name. William Adams was a son of Amos Adams, a Revolutionary War soldier from Pepperell, Massachusetts, and wife Sarah Kemp.
I am going out on a limb on this family tree by stating that Joseph C. Adams was a son of William Adams & Eleanor Crosby. It appears that they already had a son named Joseph Adams who was still living for many years after the birth of Joseph C. Adams. It is unlikely that they would have two sons at the same time named Joseph. HOWEVER... Joseph C. Adams had a middle name... most likely Crosby. That may have been a way to set them apart. Another possibility is that his first name may have been Jophanus instead of Joseph. He had a son Jophanus H. Adams who served in the Civil War. He also had a grandson, Jophanus Warren Adams who was often times known as Joseph.
Any further insights about his parentage would be appreciated.
