First child of Charles and Lucy A. Hancock Stokes.
At age 21, he became an assistant to his father in the tax office, but aspired to become a doctor of medicine. He abandoned the work of the farm and entered the medical department of the University of Louisville in Kentucky and was graduated as a member of the class of 1892. He began his practice of medicine at Elkhart, Texas where he met and married Cora Davis on 27 March 1895.
After six years he returned to his Alma Mater and completed a post-graduate course in medicine and surgery. He then established offices with Dr J.S. Wootters in Crockett and became known as one of the leading physicians of Houston County and East Texas. He served as president and also secretary of the Houston County Medical Society as well as the American Medical Association.
Dr. Stokes was most interested in all civic affairs, the promotion of modern farming methods, schools of the county and served on the Board of Education for several years.
He was popular with the youth in the church and schools, attended all football games and served as the team physician.
He died on Dec 9, 1931 and his wife passed away on April 3, 1964.
They were the parents of six children;
