The Arledge family is first known in the 17th Century in Northcumberland County, Virginia.

John Fisher was the son of Cyrus Arledge and Lucy Featherston Arledge, who lived in Fairfield County, South Carolina prior to moving to Alabama.
John Fisher's grandfather Arledge, a large plantation owner in South Carolina, participated in the American Revolution as did his grandfather John Featherston, who served with Marion's Men.

John Fisher Arledge married Harriet E. Jones, a daughter of Samuel Pointer Jones and Mary Wright. (Mary Wright being the daughter of James D. Wright and wife Charlotte Wright of Madison County, Alabama.)
In Vol. 187, Limestone County, Ala. p. 310 of Marriage Records of early Ala., there is is a marriage report: John F. Arledge to Harriet E. Jones 23 Nov 1840. Executed 25 Nov, 1840 by Jas. C. Elliott, M.G.

In Nov. 1853 a covered wagon caravan set out from Lawrence County, Alabama, for
Texas with John Fisher Arledge as a leader and scout. With him, were the Thompson and Tunstall families and his wife Harriet E. Jones Arledge, and seven of his thirteen children they eventually had. His mother, Lucy Featherston Arledge, (Cyrus Arledge, his father had died July 1842), and some slaves completed the group.

Southeast of Crockett they established a plantation and home. Sam, the oldest son, rode horseback to Cochino School. Later the family had a house in Crockett so that the younger children could attend school there. After Harriet died in 1869, John married Ann Arledge of Tennessee, the widow of his cousin, Coleman Arledge.
