Herbert Eugene Barker was the youngest of 11 children born to
William H Barker and Margaret E Williamson. His siblings were Jane E Hinkle, Florence Settlemyer, Thomas Leroy, John Preston, Anna Luella Miller, Carrie Cline, Lester Fletcher, and Gerlie Warren.

About 1914 he became the husband of Lettie Mae Sims, daughter of Eli Sims and his wife Fannie Hager. This union was blessed with Evelyn Iola O'Dell Fisher, Otis Eugene and Margaret Mae Beaver. Lettie died of Influenza in December 1922.

Herbert had to work for a living and had no one to care for the children. He gave Evelyn to his sister in law Carrie Sims Mayhew, Otis to Charlie and Laura Alley, and Margaret to Ollie Saunders. Evelyn came to live with her father and his 2nd wife after her foster mother died.

About 1924 he married Bertie Pettus. Their children were Herbert Jr, Melvin Glenn, William Eugene, James Vernon and Patricia Porch Plemons.
