Obituary - Retired Judge Ernest Frank Baldwin, Jr., died Tuesday, June 26, 1990, of cancer at his son's home in Lexington, Virginia. He was 73 years old.
Judge Baldwin was born in Silver City, Utah on February 26, 1917, to Ernest Frank and Eva Christison Baldwin. He was a resident of Salt Lake City, and graduated from East High School and the University of Utah, where he received his law degree.
A member of the University of Utah football team, where he was a Big Seven All-Conference center, Judge Baldwin played in the 1939 Sun Bowl and was an enthusiastic supporter of the football program. He was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, the Utah and American Bar Associations, the Old Time Athletics Association and had served on the Board of Directors of the Utah Heart Association and as a volunteer with Odyssey House. He served in the Air Force as a Major during World War II, and was a member of the LDS Church.
Judge Baldwin began his law career in 1946 as an Assistant County Attorney. He practiced insurance defense law for 25 years with the firm of Stewart, Cannon and Hanson, which later became Hanson and Baldwin. He was appointed by Governor Calvin Rampton to Third District Bench in 1971, and retired to serve as a Senior Judge in 1985.
Survived by: His wife, Marian Cheney Baldwin, children, G. Gregory and Catheryn Baldwin Francis, Salt Lake City; Dr. Ernest F. (Pete) and Barbara Baldwin, Lexington, Virginia; John C. and Diane Baldwin, and Dr. James D. (Sam) and Cindy Baldwin, of Salt Lake City; 13 sports-loving and ballet-dancing grandchildren, and a brother, Col. Richard A. Baldwin, of Salt Lake City. He was preceded in death by a sister, Kathryn, and brothers, Parley and Dr. Jack N. Baldwin. Ernie read a lot, never played enough golf to get a decent handicap, and couldn't get over the habit of going to East High football games.
A memorial service will be held Friday, July 6, at 12 noon, in the Bonneville Stake Center, 1535 East Bonneville Drive (1050 South just above 15th East). Family and friends may drop by Thursday, July 5, from 7 to 9 p.m., at John's home, 1527 East Princeton Ave. (1150 South, also just above 15th East) and at the church one hour prior to the service. Judge Baldwin was cremated at his request and will be entombed at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park in Salt Lake City.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Judge Baldwin's name to the University of Utah Athletic Department for athletic scholarships.
