FORMER GOVERNOR'S WIDOW DIES AT 83
Mrs. John Crepps Wickliffe Beckham, 83, widow of a former Kentucky Governor and United States senator, died Thursday at her home in Winter Park, Fla. She had lived there more than 30 years. Her husband, who died in 1940, was a colorful force in Kentucky politics for nearly two decades. He began his career as a State representative in 1896. He was later elected lieutenant governor and then became Governor in 1900 after the assassination of Governor William Goebel. He served in the U. S. Senate from 1914 to 1920. He remained active as a Democratic Party leader. Mrs. Beckham, the former Jean Fuqua, was an Owensboro native. She was active in Presbyterian Church work in Florida. Her survivors include a daughter, Miss Eleanor Beckham, New York, and a sister, Mrs. W. E. Gardner. The body will be at Lee E. Cralle Funeral Home, 1330 S. Third, after 1 p.m. Monday. The funeral will be there at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Frankfort Cemetery, Frankfort, Ky.
