Funeral services for Dr. Aaron North Longfield, 83, will be March 19, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at School Creek Baptist Church. Pastor Jerry Perkins will officiate.
Burial will follow at Smith School Creek Cemetery in Lampasas County.

Dr. Longfield died March 13 in San Antonio.
Born Oct. 31, 1921, he was the only child of Mary Jane Nuckles and Arthur North Longfield.

After he returned from New Mexico with his parents, he lived on a ranch and attended Unity School in Lampasas County for three years.
He moved to Washington, D.C., with his mother in 1930. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1941 and from Northwestern University Medical School in 1944.

While interning in St. Louis, he married Betty Lou Liggett of Virden, Ill., on April 7, 1945. She preceded Dr. Longfield in death on Jan. 22, 1991.

He married Marye Belle Hart of Evanston, Ill., on Oct. 5, 1991.
After service in the Army Medical Corps, he completed residency training in internal medicine in Denver. He then accepted a faculty position at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.
Dr. Longfield later joined the Veterans Administration and served at hospitals in Albuquerque, N.M., Houston, Marlin, New Orleans and Waco. He held faculty appointments in pulmonary medicine at each location with the local medical school.

In 1985, he retired from his 35-year medical career with the VA to do ranching in Lampasas County.

Dr. Longfield is survived by his wife, Marye Belle Longfield; two children and their spouses; seven grandsons, Daniel Longfield, Colin Longfield and Evan Longfield and Patrick Gerety, Christopher Gerety and Matthew Gerety; and one great-grandson, Noah Cal Longfield.
Son Robert N. Longfield retired as a colonel from Army service and practices medicine in San Antonio. Bob's wife, Jenice, is an active duty Army physician who oversees medical research programs at Brooke Army Medical Center.

Daughter Lynn Longfield practices pediatrics in Albuquerque. Lynn's husband, Richard Gerety, practices cardiothoracic surgery at the Heart Hospital in Albuquerque.

Dr. Longfield's grandson, Patrick Gerety, also is pursuing a career in medicine.
