Laura Jane Dean, 78, died Thursday, January 15, 2009, at an Abilene nursing center.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Hamby United Methodist Church with the Reverends Doris Miller and Janice Kahl officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory. Burial will be in Shep Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Born in Wilmeth (Runnels County), Texas on February 25, 1930, she was the daughter of Ethel Etta (Hamner) and Joseph Thomas Casey. She attended schools in Norton, Winters, Shep and Blackwell. On September 22, 1948, she married Derrell Dean in Shep. Mrs. Dean was a homemaker who loved her family, gardening, sewing, cooking and helping with the family farm. She also loved writing. She also worked at Timex, Thornton's, Hodges & Fields Cotton Company Office, and Hamby School as secretary. Since 1951, she had been a member of Hamby United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Dean was preceded in death by her husband, Derrell, on October 31, 2008; one son, Paul Kevin Dean in 1990; her mother and father; and a brother, Tommy Ray Casey.

Survivors include sons, Robert Dean and wife, Jacki, of Brady, and Tracy Dean and wife, Melinda, of Abilene; daughters, Susan Dean Lewis and husband, Andy, of Del Rio, Texas, and Cheryl Dean O'Quin and husband, Bill, of Mineral Wells; 13 grandchildren, Haskel Lewis, Kent Lewis, Dallas Dean, Skylar Dean, Porsha Dean, Jack O'Quin, Samantha O'Quin, Russell Dean, Matthew Dean, Chandra Dean, Catlin Dean, Baylon Dean, and Dillon Dean; and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brothers, Joe Casey and wife, Betty Ann, of Abilene, John Casey and wife, Monna, of Wylie, Texas, and Dick Casey and wife, Hazel, of Potosi; and a sister, Sarah Doucette of Abilene.
