Arthur R. Scheberle, 89, of Sterling, passed away Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, in Sterling. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home, with Vigil services and Recitation of the Rosary at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, with the Rev. Robert L. Wedow officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, with military rites. Arthur was born July 1, 1920, in St. Mary, Neb., to Frank and Mary Agnes (Chrzaszcz) Scheberle. He attended St.Anthony Catholic School.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was an electrician's mate second class on the USS Heywood, which received awards and citations for opera tions in Guadalcanal, the Gilbert Islands, the Marianas, Tmian, Leyte and Luzon.
On Aug. 28, 1950, he married Evelyn Berg at St. Peter's Catholic Church. They were married 33 years. Arthur owned and operated Scheberle Jewelry from 1953 until his retirement in 1983.
He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, American Legion Post 20, VFW Post No. 3541 and the BPO Elks Lodge No. 1336. He enjoyed building and flying radio controlled airplanes and was a self-taught computer wizard and a patented inventor. Arthur is survived by his daughters, Sandra Monahan and husband Robert, Marilyn Cobb and husband William, Mary Jane Hansen and hus band Lanny, Laura Rogers and husband Robert; son, Steven Scheberle and wife Denise; brothers, Leo Scheberle, Brother Joseph (Richard) Scheberle, and Frank Scheberle and wife Patricia; sisters, Teresa Rinaldo and husband Louis, Mary Ann Hammett; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Scheberle; son, Gordon Scheberle; and daughter, Sharon Tinglum. Memorial contributions may be made to the Samaritan House Homeless Shelter, 2301 Lawrence St., Denver, CO 80205.
