Earl Granger Saunders, Sr.

ABBEVILLE. . .Earl Granger Saunders, Sr., a resident of County Road 53, Abbeville, died Wednesday morning, March 24, 2010, at his home. He was 92.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P. M. Friday, March 26, 2010, in the First Baptist Church of Abbeville with Reverend Mike Whitt, Reverend Teddy Ward and Reverend Ray S. Reiley officiating. Burial will follow in the Abbeville Memorial Cemetery. Masonic rites will be conducted at the graveside. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:30 P. M. Friday in the First Baptist Church Family Life Building.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 606, Abbeville, AL. 36310 or to the Old Abbeville City Cemetery Restoration Fund, P.O. Box 427, Abbeville, AL. 36310 or to Carpenters For Christ, c/o Eastern Hills Baptist Church, 3604 Pleasant Ridge Road, Montgomery, AL. 36109.

Mr. Saunders was born in Abbeville, son of the late William Peyton Saunders, Sr. and Verna Granger Saunders. He was reared in the Union Community of Henry County where he lived all his adult lifetime. Mr. Saunders was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Abbeville where he served as a Deacon and was a member of the Jeremiah Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Brown's Crossroads Masonic Lodge No. 529 and served as Worshipful Master seven terms and along with other capacities within the lodge during his membership. Mr. Saunders was engaged in farming all his adult lifetime and formerly owned and operated Farmer's Quick Freeze in Abbeville.

Mr. Saunders was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Marshall Saunders, a sister, Robbie Saunders Wallace and two brothers, William Peyton (Will) Saunders and C. L. (Buck) Saunders.

Surviving relatives include three sons, Earl G. Saunders, Jr. and wife, Judy Saunders, Mike Saunders and wife, B.B. Saunders and Bill Saunders, all of Abbeville; a sister, Martha Saunders Boyette, Dothan; two grandsons, Pate Saunders and John Ralph Saunders and wife, Abby Saunders, a great-grandson, John Lewis Saunders; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law from the Marshall family, Marvette and Ruth Marshall, Columbia; James T. and Marie Trawick, Ashford; and Ann Marshall Armstrong, Headland; special family member, Ivery Dee Lingo, Abbeville and a close friend, Patsy Elliott, Abbeville.

Serving as active and honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Masonic Order. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of the Jeremiah Sunday School Class.
