Funeral services for Vance Jacob Cluff, 80, of Thatcher, who died Feb. 15, 2002, at the Mt. Graham Community Hospital, were held Feb. 18 in the LDS Church Street Chapel, with Bishop Bruce Dodge of the Thatcher First Ward officiating.

A son-in-law, Kent Simmons, offered the family prayer. The congregation sang "Because I Have Been Given Much," accompanied by Regina Noake, with Trisha Simmons as chorister. Vance's brother, Varlyn D. Kight, offered the invocation. The life story was given by Larry Larson, a nephew. A special number, "God Bless America," was sung by Vance's grandchildren. Hyrum Morris Jr., a son-in-law, gave the sermon. The closing song was "Oh My Father." Lee Boyce Kight, a brother, gave the benediction.

Concluding ceremonies with military honors, including a 21-gun salute and bugle "Taps" by the Gila Valley Veteran' s Honor Guard, followed in the Thatcher Cemetery. Son-in-law Jim Owens gave the dedicatory prayer.Vance was born on April 22, 1921, at Cluff's Ranch, Pima. He was the third child of Dora Pulsipher and Wallace Cluff. His father died when he was a young boy, leaving a widow with five children. Dora married Alma Kight and added five more children to the family. Vance's wife, Alice; three sisters, Therma, Levora and Lenora; a brother, Vestal; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild preceded him in death.

Vance attended school in Pima and enjoyed all sports. After high school he attended Arizona State University. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942. He took his basic at Buckley Field in Denver, Colo. He flew 20 combat missions as a tail gunner on an A-20 bomber, including missions over Japan, a total of 71 hours of combat. Vance developed his love of country and respect for the flag through his service in World War II.

After the war he met and married Alice Hawkins Lee on Dec. 14, 1946. Together they raised five children.

Vance was well-known in the community as manager and part owner of Fannin's Service and Supply Co. He was also a very active member of the American Legion Post 32.

Surviving are his children: four daughters, Ginger Owens of Tucson, Evelyn Davis of York Valley, Colleen Simmons and Julie Morris of Thatcher; a son, Jake of Broomfield, Colo.; three sisters, Elda Meadows, Ila Howard and Marvella Anders; two brothers, Lee and Varlyn Kight; 20 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

We love him and will miss him very much.
