Phyllis Maxine Springer was born in Hurley, Missouri, on May 19, 1917, the fifth daughter and youngest of eight children of Lemuel Allen and Mary Lillian (Thompson) Springer; granddaughter of the Rev. James Dobbins and Nancy Elizabeth (Morris) Springer and Elijah Eagleton and Louisa Malvina (Lee) Thompson. Ten days after her birth the little town of Hurley suffered severe damage from a tornado. She lived her entire life in the Hurley area and attended Hurley schools, graduating from high school in 1935. While a student she was a member of the girls' basketball team. She was employed in the Agricultural Adjustment Administration (Triple A) office in Galena in the late 1930's-early 1940's. She married Marvin Wilson in 1941. During WWII she began working as acting postmaster of the US Post Office in Hurley while the regular postmaster was in the service. She assumed charge of the Hurley post office September 1, 1948, and served in this capacity until her retirement. She was mother of three children and step-mother of two. She was active in several community organizations including the Hurley Methodist Church (treasurer for several years), the Eastern Star (Oak Leaf Chapter in Crane), local co-ordinator for March of Dimes for several years, Hurley PTA and other organizations. She had a talent for singing and sang (alto) with a group from the community who were asked to sing at many funerals. She was often asked to sing as a solo "Beyond the Sunset". She liked to knit and knitted many sweaters and other articles for friends and family. In later years she developed rheumatoid arthritis, which caused her much difficulty, and it was complications of this disease which resulted in her rather sudden death on June 4, 1979.
