The son of Seth Nehemiah & Elizabeth (Young) Hutton, by 1850 the family was living in Coshocton County, Ohio. In 1860, he was a laborer living with his family in that county.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of seventeen and mustered into federal service March 23, 1865, as a private with Co. E, 51st Ohio Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company October 3, 1865, at Victoria, Texas.

He married Eliza Lower July 7, 1867, in Montgomery County, Illinois. and fathered Cornelious (b. 05/01/68), Henry (b. @1871), and John Cyrus (b. 02/19/73). Eliza died in 1874, and he married Jane Lower ca. 1873, in Bates County, Missouri, fathering William Wesley (b. 01/18/76), Lillie (b. @1879), Evalena L. (b. 06/06/80, d. 03/06/83), Gertrude Clara (b. 12/??/81 - married John Willis), and Daniiel Ira (b. 09/08/84). Jane died in1887 and he married much younger divorcée Elizabeth Jane Abel, née Hill, February 22, 1888, in Bates County, Missouri, fathering Elva Marie (b. 04/26/89 - married John Kenneth Urquart), Frank Leslie (b. 02/23/92), and Albert Alvin (b. 11/10/93). He lived the final decades of his life in Missouri but died in Alberta, Canada.

The birth year shown above is questionable. There are reports that he was born 1848 although the 1860 census lists his age as fourteen. If 1846 is the correct birth year, then he was eighteen years of age when he enlisted, yet he claimed seventeen. That makes little sense given that he would then have had to present written parental permission to enlist. Had he been born in 1848, then he would have been sixteen years old, and it was very common for recruits to add a year to their age.
