Son of Edward & Arabella (Williams) Gere. His grandfather, Gross Williams was the landlord of the Williams House and his grandfather, Isaac Gere built the first brick block in Northampton for his jewelry store across from the First Congregational Church

At seventeen he went to work at The Hampshire Herald in Northampton. Within two years, he was the editor. In 1848 the Herald and the Courier were combined with Henry as the first assistant editor; he later became the editor and sole proprietor. In 1858, the Courier combined with the Gazette owned by Trumbull & Gere with James R Trumbull as the junior partner.

On 22 August 1849, he married Martha Clapp.

In 1858 he was chosen as County Treasurer. He relinquished the post in 1861 to join the 52nd Regiment and became the Postmaster for the Army of the Mississippi at Baton Rouge. Throughout the war, he also was the war correspondent for the Gazette providing first hand account of both battles and living conditions.

After his discharge, he returned to the office of County Treasurer, which he held for a total of 18 years. He was chairman of the Republican county committee for 25 years, a member of the Northampton School Committee for 6 years, and was a trustee of the Northampton Institution for Savings.

In 1908, the Western Massachusetts editors gave him a banquet in Springfield for his 80th birthday. At the time he had been a newspaper editor for 62 years, and was believed to be the longest serving editor in New England.
