Sarah was the daughter of Judge Harry Innes and his wife Elizabeth Callaway Innes. She married Francis Thornton on June 2, 1792 in Henrico Virginia at the age of 16. They lived on the Fall Hill Plantation founded by Francis Thornton Sr. This marriage produced 8 children including James Innes Thornton who served as Alabama's third Secretary of State.
