James was 7 yrs. old when his father West Wilson settled in Iowa. They came by wagon from Connecticut. He had a good childhood in the farmland of Iowa, herding cattle, chasing animals and riding horses. He was 11 yrs. old when his mother died. It was difficult until his father married again. He left home in Traer, Iowa in 1872 when he was 22 and went to work for the Northern Pacific Railrad for 3 yrs. At the age of 42 he married Joesphine Grant Prescott. They had 8 children, Robert Whannel and Nellie, Harry, Audie Maude, William Henry, James West, Edwin Joseph, and Marguerite. He had a large home in Inglewood with many trees and the most beautiful roses and calla lilies, and many vegetables.
