Paul was a self-made man if ever there was one. When he was four years old, his father died, and although his mother tried to make ends meet by cleaning houses, they remained poor. Paul was therefore taken out of school in the sixth grade in order to work. He was first a very industrious paperboy, and then clerked in a drugstore.

The latter job helped him decide to become a pharmacist, so he obtained tutoring to achieve a high school education, and then enrolled in the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. As further tribute to his industry, not to mention his intelligence and focus, he was graduated in a mere three years with a doctorate in pharmacy. His drug store in Hopewell, N.J., was the only one in town, and locals sometimes relied upon him rather than their doctor: thus he became known as "Doc Cutter."

Paul married Clara Elizabeth Wolfe on Sept. 12, 1922 (see photograph with caption). They would later have two sons, Paul Styer Cutter Jr. and John Wolfe Cutter.

"Uncle Paul," to this grand-nephew as a boy, seemed a wealth of information, since he patiently took time to explain things. I well recall his letting me search for elements on the back of the dollar bill ("Can you find an eye?") and his explaining that these bits combined to indicate that this was valid federal currency. He was patiently instructive like that.
