Leo Herman "Rusty" was born in 1887 in Blunt, South Dakota. He was a cowboy in his younger days and later became a Jack-of-all-trades and master of many. He served in the army in WWI, work in the Pierre City Power Plant and also at the Pierre Indian School.

On September 7, 1922 Rusty married Winnifred Viola (Leach) Hurlburt. They moved to Cloquet, Minnesota where Rusty worked in a paper mill. They returned to Fort Pierre for awhile and later moved to Tacoma, Washington. They both worked in the shipyards at Bremerton. After Rusty died Winnie moved back to Fort Pierre.

Leo and Winnie had two children.
