Home From Chautauqua Lake
Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Drake, Col. and Mrs. W. R. Caulkins, Col. W. K. Caffee and Master Billy Drake have returned from Chautauqua Lake, N.Y., where they have been for more than a month. Mrs. Arthur Caffee and children, of Washington, D. C., were also at Chautauqua Lake at the same time and have also returned to their home.
Upon reaching Chautauqua Lake little Billy Drake was taken down with measles and the two children of Mrs. Arthur Caffee also contracted the disease.
The day before the party left Chautauqua Lake, Billy Drake caught a 19 inch bass that weighed four and a half pounds. Fishing in the lake was unusually good this year.

COL. DRAKE, EX-CARTHAGE PUBLISHER, DIES AT 59

Lt. Col. William A. Drake, 59 years old, of Arlington, Virginia, formerly of Carthage, died unexpectedly Friday in Laguna Beach, California, friends here have been informed.

Colonel Drake was a retired public relations officer for the army and was stationed in Washington prior to his retirement. He was visiting an uncle in Laguna Beach when he underwent surgery for a hemorrhage. He recovered from the surgery, but was stricken with pneumonia which caused his death.

Surviving is a son, John Drake of Golden Colorado, who flew to California upon being informed of his father's death. Another son, Lt. Sherwood Drake II was killed in a plane accident in 1955. Mrs. Drake, the former Elizabeth Young of Joplin, died last July 20 in Arlington.

Col. Drake was son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Sherwood Drake, widely known Carthage residents, and formerly was publisher of the Carthage Democrat.

Col Drake served as a public relations officer in both World War II and the Korean War. In 1958 he was assigned by the Army to act in a similar capacity when military forces moved into Little Rock, Arkansas to protect Negro students integrating a high school there.

Private services will be held in Park Cemetery, probably Monday, under direction of the Knell mortuary.

Grandparents of Col. Drake are
Albert M. Drake
Sarah Mariah (Gill) Drake both early day pioneers of Carthage. Mr. Drake was proprietor of Drake Hardware on the East side of the square.
