Merle Lee Huey, 79, a long time resident of Belen, passed away on Tuesday, November 26.
She was born in Danville, Arkansas, on November 29, 1922. She was married in 1938 to Roy Shoemate, who in December of 1944 was reported lost at sea when his ship went down during World War II.
In May of 1946, she married Lawrence Stanford in Clovis, and the family moved to Belen shortly after. Lawrence passed away in January of 1963.
In April of 1964, she married Elvin Huey in Belen, and they were married until his passing in August of 1990.
Mrs. Huey was a very active member of the First Baptist Church of Belen where she was a member of the Joyagers Senior Choir and other church organizations. She also helped many homebound church members by taking them shopping, taking them food, and delivering other items they might need.
She was preceded in death by her three husbands; her son Dexter Shoemate in 1943; her daughter Donna Kerby in February 2000; and her parents E. B. and Emma Thompson.
She is survived by her daughter Bonnie Glover and husband Boyce; her two sons Larry Stanford and wife Nancy, and Paul Stanford; her 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
She will be greatly missed by her family. They wrote, "We love you, Mom." The family would like to thank the staff at Belen Care and Rehabilitation for her care and family support.
A visitation was held at the First Baptist Church in Belen on Friday, November 29, followed by a funeral service. Graveside service will take place at the Mission Garden of Memories in Clovis at 11:00 AM Saturday, November 30. Romero Funeral Home, 609 N. Main St., Belen.
