IGNATIUS FREIBURGER IS DEAD
- Well Known Grocery Man Dies After A Long Illness -
- Met With Remarkable Success As A Retail Merchant -
Wednesday evening shortly after 3 o'clock occured the death of Ignatius Freiburger, proprietor of the Central Grocery company, of West Wayne street, and of the firm of I. Freiburger & Co., of Broadway. Mr. Freiburger had been in ill health for a number of years, and when his condition became serious a week ago he sank rapidly to his death. Diabetes was the cause of his demise.
Mr. Freiburger started in business here when quite young with J.B. White in the White Fruit House, advancing from clerk to manager, after which he and C.J. Michael established the Central grocery on West Wayne street. Mr. Michael sold out to Mr. Freiburger, who conducted the business most successfully alone, and later established the Wayne grocery on Broadway. Associated with him in business in recent years have been his three sons - Marcelles, Clarence H. and Lawrence Freiburger.
- Native of France -
Born in France in 1853, Mr. Freiburger came to this country in 1857 with his parents, settling with them on a farm in Pleasant township. Coming to Fort Wayne later, he entered first into the service of Gerardin Bros. and then began the career detailed above. He was married in 1881 to Miss Mary Schweiters, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schweiters. Besides the widow and three sons mentioned above, another son, Frank, of the German-American National bank, survives, and two daughters, Mrs. Charles S. Freistoffer and Miss Helen Agnes Freiburger, all of this city. There is one grandson, Charles Freistoffer, Jr., and six brothers and sisters - Bernard, John, George W. and Joseph J. Freiburger, of this city; Peter Freiburger, of Mishawaka; Anthony C. Freiburger, of Grand Rapids, and Mary Freiburger and Mrs. Caroline Koorsen, of this city.
Mr. Freiburger was a member of the old volunteer fire department, of the Knights of Columbus, the Franco-American society, St. Joseph's league, the Fort Wayne Commercial club and the Retail Merchants association. In religion he belonged to St. Paul's Catholic church.
Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 8:30 o'clock from the residence and at 9 o'clock from St. Paul's Catholic church.
