Mary died from an illegal botched abortion.

OBIT:

Mrs. R. A. Champ died yesterday morning in her room in the Pitz lodging house, which is across the street from the Washington Hotel. The verdict of a coroner's jury held yesterday afternoon is that death was the result of a criminal operation performed by parties unknown to the jury.

While it is believed that Mrs. Champ had been seriously ill for several days, the fact was not known until yesterday morning when the woman sent her son for Dr. Moser. The woman died about ten minutes after Dr. Moser arrived. Hemorrhage was the direct cause of death and the condition of the bed and room was frightful. She refused to tell who had performed the operation. The only information that she would give on the subject was that it had been done in Portland.

Mrs. Champ was about forty years old. Her maiden name was Mary Ivester and she was born in Tennessee. Her father's name was H. J. Ivester. She was married in Winlock twenty years ago to R. A. Champ. The two were separated by divorce about a year ago.

The funeral will be held in Winlock Tuesday, the Baptist minister of that place officiating. At the inquest conducted by Coroner Hardin, F. Smith, Galen Devore, Ben Salick, Rive Jackson and M. Jacques acted as jurymen.
