He was the son of the late A.E. "Bud" Cowan and Ouida Major Cowan.

He was a retired dairyman and served as past board member of the Federal Land Bank. He was a member of Concord Baptist Church and a former deacon at Little River Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James Allen Cowan and Wofford Cowan.
