THE PARIS NEWS, Sunday, June 11, 2000, page 8: ’Mary Gladys Nicholson Echols, 83, of Paris, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at Heritage Care Center. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, in Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Randall Perry and the Rev. Paul Appleby officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 7-8 p.m. Monday. She was born April 28, 1917, in Pattonville, a daughter of Floyd Edward and Mae Lee Riley Nicholson. She attended public schools in Lamar County, graduating as valedictorian of her senior class. She also attended Paris Junior College. She married Thomas Lee Echols in Austin, Sept. 18, 1938. He died March 17, 1966. She was active in home demonstration work in Lamar County and was chosen as one of 12 women in the county, sponsored by the late A. G. ‘Pat’ Mayse of The Paris News. The group organized a club known as The Farm Women of the Month Club and met for 10 years. Their project was Farm to Market road beautification. Mrs. Echols was active in Business and Professional Women’s Club, serving as president, and being awarded the Woman of the Year award in 1980. She retired from the Collegiate Shoppe in 1982 after completing 25 years of service as shoe buyer and salesperson. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church, serving as president of the Keenagers (a seniors group) for several years. She was active in Sunday School and a member of the Silvertones Choir. She is survived by a sister, Grace, and husband, J. T. Carter of Paris; a sister-in-law, Reba Echols of Paris; two nieces, Betty Lee and husband Randell Merritt of Powderly, and Mary and husband Larry Kent of Dallas; three nephews, Jack Echols and wife Gayle of Paris, Ray Bryant Echols and wife Jan of Rockport, and Ed Echols and wife Linda of Plano; three great-nephews, Dwayne Merritt and wife Amy of Fort Campbell, Ky., Shane Merritt and wife Michelle of Fort LeJune, N.C., and Zachary Kent of Dallas; and several great-great-nieces, nephews and cousins. Pallbearers will be Randell Merritt, Larry Kent, Jackie Echols, Dwayne Merritt, Shane Merritt and Mark Gee.′
