AGED DELTAN DIES
Royal J. Gardner died at his house in Delta on Wednesday at the age of eighty five years and six months. He had enjoyed good health and been very active until the last three weeks when he contracted a slight illness and since Sunday he had been seriously ill.
Mr. Gardner was born in Mill Creek and when he was a small boy his family moved to St. George and later into Pine Valley and it was there he spent the greater part of his life. He helped his father set up a saw mill in Pine Valley and he was in that business until he moved to Delta with his own family fifteen years ago. Their mill sawed out the lumber years ago for the St. George Temple and Tabernacle.
At the time the Melville Irrigation Company project was being settled, Mr. Gardner was among those to come here and was the third man to draw his slip of paper for a town lot out of a hat when the historic proceedure was enacted. He kept his farm and town lots here with a son to run it and in 1924 moved here and has farmed and made his home here since. His wife, Mrs. Chloe Snow Gardner died in Delta in 1936.
He is survived by the following children; Royal Gardner of Cedar City; Mrs. Emma Abbott of Mesquite, Arizona; Mrs. Rose Abbott of Bunkerville; J.X. Gardner of Springville; Mary, Levi and Clair Gardner of Delta; Cuman Gardner of Newcastle and Mrs. Peyton Johnson of Santa Paula, Cal. Also by these brothers; H.O. Gardner of Delta; R.B. Gardner of Cedar City; Reuben Gardner of Pine Valley; Amos Gardner of Ely, Nev.; George and David Gardner of Lund; Angus Gardner of Lehi and one sister Mrs. Alice Snow of St. George. Also twenty seven grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
During the years he lived in Pine Valley, Mr. Gardner was a member of the bishopric and was always active in LDS Church work. He also served for four years as their school board member there. Since he has resided in Delta, Mr. Gardner had proved himself a citizen of sterling worth and has been held in the highest regard by his many friends here. His life spanned the years of pioneering and building up of this state and he was a valued member of his community both when here and in southern Utah.
Funeral services will be held in the Delta Second Ward church on Friday morning at 10:30.
