Bess Church McDonald, 93, passed away Thursday, July 1, 2010, in her home following complications from a fall. Funeral: 2 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church. Graveside: 11 a.m. Thursday, July 8, in Rose Hill Cemetery in Merkel. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Funeral Home. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to ASPCA, USO or Community Hospice of Texas. Bess Church McDonald was born April 27, 1917, in Merkel to Frank Etcyl and Bessylea Beene Church. She graduated from Merkel High School then entered McMurry University in Abilene where she earned a bachelor's degree in English and Spanish. Her master's degree was from Texas Christian University. She began teaching in 1936 and retired 41 years later in Odessa. She and her husband, A.G. "Mac" McDonald moved to Fort Worth in 1981. Bess was an active club woman whose memberships include the Daughters of the American Revolution; Carswell Retired Officers Widows Association; the Woman's Club of Fort Worth; and Delta Kappa Gamma, the teachers' sorority, of which she has been a member and in some administrative capacity for 58 active years. She also belonged to the First United Methodist Church, where she volunteered at the mission as a Spanish interpreter. She also volunteered at the thrift shop on base at NAS /JRB. She loved animals and financially supported rescue organizations like Best Friends and the ASPCA. She also supported the USO. Bess was preceded in death by her husband in 1988. Survivors: Daughter, Gerlyn of Fort Worth; sister, Frances Marie Bryant of Kerrville; nieces, Dawn Crider of Austin and Sylvia Ostos of Kerrville; nephews, Stephen Bryant of Florida and Stanley Bryant of Denver; cousin, Carolann Earl of Fort Worth.
