Ernest Franklin Kocher, 89, a resident of RiverWoods, Lewisburg, for the past two years, and formerly of 60 Market St., Mifflinburg, died at 5:45 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, 2007, in the nursing home.
Born June 10, 1918, in Williamsport he was the son of the late Floyd M. and Carry (Schoonover) Kocher.
He and his wife, the former Myra J. Barnitz, were married Jan. 17, 1942, in the First Presbyterian Church, Mifflinburg. She died Oct. 6, 2004.
Mr. Kocher graduated from Williamsport High School with the Class of 1935 and in 1941 from Penn State University with a degree in Forestry.
Mr. Kocher entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and attained the rank of captain in the field artillery division.
Following his honorable discharge from the Army, he became a farm forester for the State of Delaware. Mr. Kocher owned and operated the Kocher Insurance Agency in Mifflinburg for 36 years and was the former mayor of Mifflinburg. During this time, he also drove school bus for 26 years.
Mr. Kocher was member of the First Presbyterian Church, Mifflinburg, where he was a former deacon, elder and Sunday school superintendent for 11 years.
He became an Eagle Scout in 1934 and served as a scout master for many years. He was a 59-year member and past grandmaster of the Free and Accepted Masons, Mifflinburg Lodge 370 and a member of Yoder-Zimmerman VFW Post 1964 and Thomas H. Clapham American Legion Post 3410, both in Mifflinburg. He also was a member of Mifflinburg Hose Company 1. He was involved in the layout and design of the Little League baseball field at the Mifflinburg Park.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol K. and Stephen C. Mullany and Nancy K. and Gregory R. Ruhl, all of Mifflinburg; two grandchildren, Curtis C. Mullany and his wife Jessica E. of New Cumberland and Katie A. Ruhl of Hoboken, N.J..
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jean K. Koch; and two brothers, Norman E. Kocher, and Herbert J. Kocher.
There will be no public viewing or visitation.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, in the Schwartz-Adamo Funeral and Cremation Services, 247 Chestnut St., Mifflinburg.
Burial with military honors will be in Hill Top Cemetery, Mifflinburg.
