My great-grandmother was born to Sam and Rosa (Reims) Bendel July 27, 1896. She grew up in Lake Charles, LA and was salutorian of her graduating class at Lake Charles HS. She was a favorite niece of her uncle Henri Bendel, the famous merchant of fine ladies clothing store in NY. He often sent her many pieces of her wardrobe including her wedding gown. In 1917 she married Adrian Goodman of Navasota, TX. They met because he was one her father's boarders and at the time was working for the local Rice Company as a salesman. They had two children together--Mary and Adrian. Shortly after Mary's birth in 1918, the family moved to Beaumont, TX and then to Houston where Adrian worked at various sales positions. In 1935 the whole family moved to San Francisco and then to the Los Angeles area in search of better job opportunities for Adrian. They were married for 27 years until Adrian's death in 1944 from a fatal heart attack. She married again to her childhood friend Harold Viterbo and remained so until his death in 1957. After his death, she lived with her mother Rosa until her death in 1975 at age 99. Towards the end of her life she was taken care of her son Dr. Adrian Goodman and visited often by her daughter Mary who resided in KS. She was much admired by my father who often ran errands for her when he lived with her for a short time after he was discharged by the military. She was lovingly called Mother by both children and grandchildren.
