He was born in Killeenadeema, near Loughrea, Galway, Ireland, to Cecilia Joyce and Lawrence John Hawkins.

John and his sister Bridget were the first of the Hawkins to arrive in America. He is a "moulder" in the 1850 Census for Meriden, Connecticut. His brother Stephen, who wrote family histories in 1911 and 1914, said John did very well for himself, and he and his wife Susan "dressed in the best assortment of the latest styles." According to Stephen, John was very strong and able to lift 1800 lb. iron safes and hold up machinery for repair.

The rest of the family arrived in Connecticut in 1849, settling in Meriden. In 1852, they moved to Fitchburg, Wisconsin, where they farmed in the Irish Lane Settlement. In the spring of 1855, the Hawkins family moved to St. Croix County, Wisconsin.
