His family moved to Hillsboro where he grew up. He attended Southwestern University and then Southern Methodist University where he received his Bachelor of Divinity. He was admitted to the Central Texas Methodist Conference in 1935. He served churches in Olney, Britton, and Bardwell. While in Olney, he met and married Miss Fay Lucile Smiddy. Rev. Coleman was appointed to the Methodist Church in Maypearl but with the outbreak of World War II, he responded to the call for Chaplains. He left Maypearl on 26 April 1942 to train at Fort Benjamin Harrison located in Indiana. After training, he was commissioned and assigned to Fort Sill, Oklahoma. While driving with his wife to his new assignment, their car was hit by a train and both were killed.
Double funeral services were held at the First Methodist Church in Hillsboro.
