Increase Chase was born on 14 July 1821 in Brantingham, Lewis County, New York, son of Heman Chase and Delia Mattison. Increase was married on 28 January 1844 in Summit County, Ohio to Harriet (Carr) Cox. Increase was married on 30 November 1845 in Summit County, Ohio to Emiline (Heard?) Wygand. Emiline was born on 18 July 1828 in New York (parents NY).

On 23 September 1850, the couple and their sons Leroy and Luther lived in Aurora, Portage County, Ohio. Increase worked as a cooper. On 23 June 1860, the couple lived in Aurora township. Increase worked as a cooper and they owned $100 in personal property. Emeline was taking care of their two youngest children, Horace and Jennelle, while the older four children- Leroy, Luther, Harriet, and Julius- attended school.

Increase served in Company H of the 177th Ohio Infantry during the Civil War. He was 5 ft 7 inches tall, had a light complexion, brown hair, and hazel eyes. He enlisted on 29 August 1864 and was mustered in on 30 September 1864. He was detailed as a cook for the medical staff and when he became sick they furnished him liniment for his rheumatism. During a march between Columbia and Clifton, North Caroline, Increase became sick with chronic diarrhea. He also suffered from lameness. He was discharged on 24 June 1865 at Greensboro, North Caroline. At the end of the war Emeline was at home when a soldier came and told her she needed to pick him up with a buggy. She drove nine miles and found him sick along the side of the road.

The Chases lived in North Hampton, Summit County, Ohio from about 1860 to 1868, where he worked at coopering and farming, and then moved to Almira township, Benzie County, Michigan in 1868. In the winter of 1869, Increase "was chopping wood and a chip struck [him] in the left eye and injured it permanently. Increase's health was not good and neighbor Martin Van Buren Clark reported that he often has to get wood and do chores for him when he was sick."

On 11 June 1870, Increase and Emeline lived in Almira township, Benzie County, Michigan with seven of their children: Harriet, Julius, Horace, Nettie, Joseph, Adeline, and Daisy. The family farm was valued at $1,000 and their personal property at $200. In the fall of 1876, Increase was so sick that Emeline had to take her daughters out to the corn fields to harvest five acres.

On 9 June 1880, Increase and his son Joseph farmed while Emeline kept house. Daughter Addie was helping out at home while her sisters Daisy and Ida attended school. On 30 June 1880, Increase purchased land from Martin Clark for $500. He and Emeline sold land in Section 17 to their son Horace on 1 July 1881 for $200. On the same day they sold 40 acres of land to son Joseph for $150.

Increase represented one of the thirteen original colonies in the 1880 July 4th celebrations at Long Lake. In December 1883, while attending the local Christmas tree party, someone entered Chase's house and stole over 50 pounds of fresh pork. Increase left Long Lake briefly in 1883: "Increase Chase, who moved to Ohio this spring with his family, has moved back on his place again, here. Says the floods in Ohio destroyed his crops, and thinks Grand Traverse the place yet." On 29 December 1885, Increase and Emeline sold 20 acres of land to Elbert H. Shirk for $60. The family moved to Traverse City in 1887. Increase was getting a disability pension for $25 in 1890 for his Civil War service, having applied in October 1889.

Emeline prepared a will on 10 June 1892. In it she requested that her estate pay for her funeral and debts. Her real estate, a house on Lot 7 of Block 14 in Hannah, Lay & Co's 3rd Addition to Traverse City, went to her husband Increase during his lifetime and then to her children and grandchildren at his death. Her children received cash- Ida L. Chase $150 and the rest- Daisy May McLaughlin, Ada A. Howard, Nettie Clark, Joseph E. Chase, and Horace W. Chase- $100 each. Grandchildren, the children of Julius J. Chase, received $10 each- Leroy A. Chase, Gracie May Chase, Libbie [?] Adel Chase, and Guy Walter Chase. Lastly, grandson Elijah Fillmore, son of her daughter Hattie E. Fillmore, also received $10. She died on 28 November 1892, apparently in Grand Traverse County, and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City.

Increase died on 9 April 1900. An obituary was printed the following day in the Morning Record:

"OLD SOLDIER DEAD

Ranks of McPherson Post Again Invaded by the Death of Increase Chase

Another old veteran of the civil war passed away yesterday afternoon, making one more mustered out of McPherson Post this winter. Increase Chase died yesterday at the home of his son-in-law, Duncan McLaughlin, at the age of 80 years.

Mr. Chase was one of the pioneers of the Grand Traverse region, coming here and settling near Long Lake 32 years ago. In 1884 he removed to this city where he has since resided.

With the exception of Uncle Dan Whipple, Mr. Chase was the oldest member of the McPherson Post. His funeral will be held from the First Methodist church tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock."
