Edward Houtz Ackerson

June 25, 1915-March 1, 2006

Edward Ackerson, 90, formerly of Brainerd, Minn., and Fort Benton, Mont., passed away at his daughter Beverly Nielsen's home in Onalaska, Wis., on March 1, 2006.

He was born June 25, 1915, in Fort Benton, Mont., to homesteaders George Sylvester and Felicia Ruth (Yager) Ackerson.

Edward served in the Air Corps of the U.S. Army during World War II. His final assignment as a senior surgical technician was at Headquarters Headquarter's Command of the First Air Force from Washington, D.C., at Mitchell Field on Long Island, N.Y.

Edward was a member of the Aurora Masonic Lodge in Brainerd. He was also a member of the Elks Club. As a long-standing member of the First Congregational Church he served on the Board of Trustees as well as taught Sunday School and confirmation classes. He was known for his willingness to help others wherever and however he could and he was delighted when he delivered Meals on Wheels in Brainerd for more than 12 years.

Edward owned, operated and then managed the ranch near Fort Benton, Mont., until the day he died. His mission was to be a good steward of the land. He also initiated the first legislation that made crop insurance available for farmers in the state of Montana.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Ruth; his brother, Truman; and his beloved wife of 54 years, Eileen (Scalcucci) Ackerson.

He is survived by his children, Judith Gaddy of Englewood, N.J., Marianna Ackerson, of Bloomington, Ind., Beverly Nielsen, of Onalaska, Wis., and George Ackerson, of Fort Benton, Mont.; seven grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; five great, grandchildren; and six great-stepgrandchildren.

As a veteran and patriot, Edward Ackerson strongly believed that liberty and freedom come at a very high price and that we as United States citizens cannot afford to be complacent about our government and justice system. He was deeply concerned about the immediate pending future of America.

A memorial service in his honor will be held in the summer at a date, time and place to be announced at a later time.

He will be remembered for his unfailing loyalty to those who knew him as a friend and for his unwavering devotion and love for his family. He will be greatly missed.
