Dexter Raper, 80, died Monday, March 15, 2010, at his daughter's home after an extended illness. A lifelong resident of Monroe County, he was born March 29, 1929, to A.O. and Jular Wiggington Raper. He married Carolyn Buchanan in 1978; she died in 2006. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and he worked in the area garment industry. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, four-wheelers, camping and boating. He was a member of the First Freewill Baptist Church in Smithville.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Bro. Tim Dederick and Bro. Chris Moody officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic Cemetery in Amory.

Survivors include one son, David Raper (Rita) of Smithville; three daughters, Barbara Raper Crook, Lana Kay Cantrell (Mike) and Sonya Thompson (Danny), all of Smithville; two sisters, Inez Armstrong (T.J.) of Smithville and Elois Irvin of Amory; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one brother, Ray Raper; and an infant sister.
