The son of Michael & Anna (Fritz) Kriner, in 1860 he was a farmer presumably living in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in the census. He stood 5' 10" tall and had dark hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Waynesboro, Franklin County, August 5, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 8 as a private with Co. E, 126th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 20, 1863. He also enlisted and mustered into federal service at Frankford, Philadelphia County, September 2, 1864, as a private with Co. A, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry (162nd Pa), also served with companies C & E, and honorably discharged with his company June 16, 1865.

He married Catharine Amanda Sponsler October 8, 1867, and fathered Myrtle (b. 11/05/69 - married Harvey B. Baker), Dora (b. 11/02/74 - married Albert Edward Gordon), Gertrude (b. 06/??/83), and Harry Michael (b. 05/27/86). In 1887, he lived in Waynesboro, Franklin County.
