Peter Elmer Minks who died in Stafford County, Kansas in 1903. The following is a write up from the newspaper which recorded the event: A Stafford County, Kansas newspaper account of an accident explains Peter's death in 1903:

"A sad accident occurred last Thursday night about ten miles south of this city. Peter Minks, with several companions, was driving along the road in a wagon when one of the men on the rear seat attempted to shoot a jackrabbit with a revolver. The cylinder in the gun refused to turn, and the man tried to turn it with his fingers when the gun unexpectedly went off and shot Minks, who was in the seat in front, the ball entering the back of his head....

Mr. Minks was from Faulkner, Okla. and had come to this county to work in harvest. Telegrams were sent to his wife at Faulkner and to his father and brothers in Chappell, Mo. On Saturday night a brother, Ed Minks, arrived on No. 1 and later Mrs. Minks and the children reached here on No.7 over the Santa Fe....

A wife and five small children are left without means of support and when they arrived here they were in destitute circumstances. The eldest child is but ten years of age and the youngest is a baby in arms. Their situation is rendered more deplorable by the fact that their wheat crop in Oklahoma was destroyed by hail, and just before the family started for this place they sere visited by another misfortune in the loss of a valuable horse..."

The people of Stafford took up a collection to help the family....a gesture which was greatly appreciated and never forgotten.
