William was my great grandfather. William Lawrence Byron was born in Tipperary, Ireland and, later on the Welsh census, his occupation was listed as "tailor". He was first married to Emilie "Emma" Cronin who was also from Tipperary and they had three sons. Thomas Byron b.1845 Tipperary, Ireland , William Patrick Byron b.1858 Tipperary, Ireland, Patrick b.1862 Tipperary, Ireland.

Then he married my great grandmother Mary Slattery Byron. Mary Slattery grew up in an orphanage in Tipperary. After Emma's death, the nuns sent her to William Byron's home to help William raise the boys. Marriage soon followed and they began to add to their family. Ellen "Nell" was born in 1866 Tipperary, Ireland. After her birth, the family moved from Tipperary to Wales and settled in the "Civil Parish of Bedwellty, Town of Rhymney, District of Llanduff, County Borough of Caerphilly, traditional county of Monmouthshire".

Work around Rhymney and Merthyr Tidfil was plentiful as the area was well known for its neighboring coal, iron and steel mines. At that time, the mining industry employed almost the entire population. They might have also been pulled to settle in this area because members of the Manning family, with whom they were close, had preceded them there.

William and Mary had 3 girls: Ellen b.1870 Tipperary, Ireland, Margaret b.1872 Rhymney, Monmouthshire, Wales, and Mary (my grandmother) b.1874 Scranton PA. And 2 boys: Lawrence "Lars" b.1867 Rhymney, Monmouthshire, Wales, and Edward (who is suppose to have been a twin) b.1872 Rhymney, Monmouthshire, Wales.

After Margaret's birth, the Byron family must have decided it was time to take their family to America where there was promise of opportunity and a new life. There were coal mines there in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania area.

It seems as though family members might have preceded them...possibly one or both of William Lawrence's sons William Patrick or Thomas...because the Byron family lived, at first, in Scranton where William and Mary's last child was born in 1974. Quite a few Byron families are shown on the census records in the 1870s and 1880s living in the Scranton area. By 1880, the William Lawrence & Mary Byron's family along with William Patrick's brother, Thomas and his new wife Marie (Connors), lived in Newport Township which is near Nanticoke.

The Byron family also had a close relationship with the Connors family. They had lived together on the same street in Newport Township. Not only had William Patrick's older brother, Thomas, married Marie Connors but their daughter, Margaret, married William Connors. It appears that the Byrons and the Connors journeyed together to Butte, Montana some time in the late 1890s. They are shown either living together or next door to each other on the 1900 census in Butte, Montana. William Byron's son, Patrick is also shown living with them. Margaret & William Connors' daughter, Bridget was born in Montana in December of 1899. Bridget's older siblings had been born in PA.

I have them in Butte, Montana in 1899-1910. Not all came to Butte, it was my gr grandparents and Patrick, Edward, Lawrence, Margaret and Mary.

It is not known whether my great grandparents William and Mary returned to PA before their deaths or if they died in Montana. They are not listed as being buried with the rest of the Byron & Manning family in St. Francis Cemetery in Nanticoke, PA.

Patrick died in Butte, Margaret and Mary stayed out West. Edward went back to PA and died there. And Lawrence is said to have gone back to PA, and committed suicide. And I don't know where he is buried.
