In 1942, she married the love of her life, Al Eckhaus, who lived across the street. In her early days, Hilda worked for a Broadway producer, and she and Al saw every Broadway show, enjoying both the theater and life in New York City. She devoted her life to her husband and family, and her many friends.
After their first child, Linda, was born, they moved to New Jersey, where their second daughter, Barbara, was born. Once the daughters were grown and married, Al got job-related wanderlust and they lived in many different places: Denver, Colorado, Hackensack, New Jersey, San Antonio and Corpus Christi, Texas, Fresno, California (twice), Farmington, New Mexico, finally settling in Scottsdale, which they both loved except, of course, for the summers ("but it is a dry heat").
Over the years their daughters had a full page of addresses and phones for their parents, but enjoyed visiting wherever they happened to live "now." Hilda had a spark that was unforgettable, and a laugh that was contagious. When she smiled, it always came from deep inside her heart. She was one in ten million.
She will remain a constant and bright spirit in the hearts of her beloved and devoted husband, Al; her loving daughters, Linda DeGise, of Phoenix, and Barbara Jacobi and son-in-law, James Jacobi, Jr., of St. Augustine, Florida. Her grandchildren, Joseph DeGise, of Portland, Oregon, and Ilyssa DeGise, of Naples, Florida, will also miss her terribly, as will her great-grandson, Alec Beauchamp, of Naples, who will grow up with often-repeated family stories to help him remember his great-grandmother.
Before her illness, Hilda had a bright, quick mind and a wonderful sense of humor. There was never any doubt that family came first in her life, and even in her last years, she endeared herself to the many kind souls who looked after her and held her in loving care, especially those at Osborne Health and Rehab.
