Robert William Smith

A memorial service with full military honors will be held for Robert William Smith on Thursday, May 7th, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Camp Nelson National Cemetery in Nicholasville, Ky.

Robert passed away on August 22, 2006 at the Westwood Nursing center in Clinton, Mo. Born on March 23, 1943 at Northeast Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., he was a son of the late Paul Alexander Smith and Beulah Loraine Fenson Stoner. Robert graduated from Ruskin High School in 1961 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in June of that year. He later served in Vietnam and retired after twenty years and one month of honorable service, having attained the rank of Chief Yeoman (YNC).

On January 7, 1981 at Waukegan, Ill. he married his third wife, Barbara Ann Swafford. Together they had one son, Justin Loray Smith of the Cliff section of Prestonsburg, who survives him. Robert loved sports, especially baseball, and avidly kept up with the statistics of various players. In addition to his son Justin and future daughter-in-law Kaylen Chambers, he leaves to posterity four grandchildren: Caitlin Isabel and Svetlana Anastasia Smith, both of Jacksonville, Fla., and Trynity Diana and Trystan Noah Wolodymyr Robert Smith, both of the Cliff section of Prestonsburg. He was survived by one brother, Paul Gerald Smith of Burleson, Texas; a sister, the late Patricia Loraine Smith of Shawnee Mission, Kan.; one half-brother, Bruce Wayne Smith of Dalton Gardens, Idaho; two nephews and two nieces, all of Texas. Donations in his honor can be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society.
