Joseph Deuel, Jr. , s. of Capt. Joseph Devol/Deuel & Mary Soule, b. Jan. 15, 1702/3 at Dartmouth, Mass. He d. testate at Dartmouth betw. May 25, 1782, the date of his will, and Oct. 1, 1782 when the witnesses gave oath to the will. The will is the only document in the Bristol County, MA probate packet.

In circa 1723, Joseph m. 1) Margaret Potter, dau. of Stokes Potter & Elizabeth Shearman {q.v., Sherman}, b. June 30, 1705 at Dartmouth, Mass. She d. bef. Sept. 6, 1760, the date he published at Dartmouth the intent to marry Sarah Howland. Joseph m. 2) the said Sarah Feb. 5, 1761 at Tiverton, Rhode Island, dau. of William and Hannah Soule, and wid. of Samuel Howland of Dartmouth, Mass. There are no known children of this second marriage.

Joseph Deuel, Jr. was a Quaker and as such none of his children appear in the vital records of the Town of Dartmouth. The only evidence of them is by virtue of his will, written as Joseph Devol, which soon morphed into the surname Deuel, and signed by his mark:

He gave son Philip Devol a "silver dollar"; to grandson Abner Devol a part of his homestead land, two cows, his cedar boat and farm utensils; to son Joseph Devol the remainder of his homestead land with the house and barn standing thereon; to kinswoman Hannah Sisson wife of James Sisson a copper tea kettle; to daughters Edith Howland, Isabel Cook, Hannah Russell, and Phebe Hull all his household goods to be equally divided; to grandson Thomas Cook his powder horn & shot bag; and to Martha wife of son Joseph his wearing apparel. The three witnesses were John Smith, William Robinson and Jacob Anthony.
