Willis enlisted in the Army at Fort Riley, Kansas in 1923. He married a young woman named Emma Belle Craney in June 1925. Emma had been suffering from kidney disease for years and died in August of 1925.
Willis got together with Josephine Bertina Stensaas Love after Emma's death. Willis was discharged from the Army in 1926, and he moved his new family to Los Angeles, California. He was working as a truck driver there. Willis and his family moved to Oklahoma by 1932 to be near his parents and siblings.
Willis re-enlisted in the Army in 1935 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. During his enlistment, he was also stationed at Camp Maxey in San Antonio, Texas, in Tacoma, Washington, in California, and at Fort Douglas in Utah. Willis was discharged in March of 1945.
Willis bought a separate acreage, and he and one of his sons put in a pond and stocked it with fish. Willis liked to fish. His children and grandchildren would gather on weekends or holidays for picnics on the acreage.
