Mathias was born in the village of Rittersbach in the Margraviate of Baden circa 1805. It is not known when he emigrated to the U.S. and settled in the Old Town neighborhood of Baltimore. According to Catholic Church records he was the widower of Catherine Schneer. Mathias married his second wife - Anna Schruefer (an immigrant from the village of Reitzendorf of the Kingdom of Bavaria) on April 18, 1869 at St. James Catholic Church in Baltimore. In the 1870 U.S. Census, Mathias was working as a wood sawyer and his wife Anna was working as a wash woman.
Their first child Andrew as born on March 31, 1870. Their second child Barbara was born on October 20, 1872.
Mathias Reichert died on February 25, 1891 at the age of 86. He was buried at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery.
