Spencer had a beautiful tenor voice and often sang at funerals & weddings. It is said he never lied and his word was "as good as gold". He loved to fish and hunt and spent his spare time enjoying these hobbies.
On June 18, 1882, he married Belle Winkleblack. The wedding was performed at Belle's father's, George Winkleblack's, home in Gainesville, MO. Spencer's father, Daniel, was present and gave consent to the marriage as Spencer was underage. Together they had 10 children, 6 died in childhood; Emma, Sarah, Jennie, and Walter lived to adulthood.
Shortly after the birth of Walter, Spencer met Daisy Bigbee and fell in love with her. He divorced Belle and married Daisy, moved out of Missouri to the Indian territory, Chickasaw Nation, in Drake, Oklahoma. They had two daughters; Mabel "Bertha" and Mamye "Little" and a son, Roy, who died young.
Spencer and Daisy are buried side by side.
