J. M. Whitson, 88, a resident of the Lutie community for 33 years, died at the home of his son, Stanley Whitson at 1:30 p.m. Monday, December 23. One of the the oldest and best loved residents of this community, he had been in ill health for approximately six months.
Mr. Whitson had been a farmer all of his life, first in Alabama, then here, until he retired due to his age.
Born December 15, 1858, James Monroe Whitson was 88 years and 8 days of age at the time of his death. He was the son of Thomas J. and Rebecca Stanley Whitson, both of whom were born in Alabama.
He grew up in that state, and on December 21, 1879, he was married to Miss Susie Caroline Bagwell. Ten children were born to them, all of whom survive. They continued to make their home there during the years their children were small. For most of this time, they lived at Tuscaloosa.
In 1913, they moved from Tuscaloosa to Collingsworth County, settling in the Lutie community, where they continued to make their home.
Mr. Whitson had been a faithful member of the Church of Christ for many years.
During the time he had lived here, Mr. Whitson had been keenly interested in the development of the area in which he lived, and had devoted much time to community enterprises and work.
Surviving are the ten children, Mrs. J. D. Dobbs of Crosbyton, Mrs. Hattie Lollar of Shamrock, Mrs. F. P. Day of Dalhart, Mrs. D. W. Kelly of Oklahoma City, Mrs. Chas. Adeylotte of Lubbock, E. D. Whitson of Panhandle, John C. Whitson of Fort Worth, J. N. Whitson of Clinton, OK, Tom B. Whitson and A. S. Whitson of the Lutie community.
