James E. Boswell was a successful piano designer, manufacturer and music publisher. His pianos won awards on two known occasions from the Baltimore Mechanic's Institute. He won both a silver and a gold medal for design of seven octave pianos. One of the Boswell & Co. square pianos is on display at a Charlotte, N.C. museum. James routinely travelled to South America to buy wood for pianos and his son, George, was born in Caracas, Veneuzela. The Civil War doomed his business, and he died at age 54 in 1870 while living with his wife and extended relatives in Washington, D.C. This writer owns photographs of him and our family owns the silver Mechanics Institute award he won in 1851. At this time, it is not known who were James Boswell's parents.
