Private Ezra Keller served in Company K of the 48th Pennsylvania Emergency Militia, which was mustered between July 2 through 8, 1863, and disbanded on August 26, 1863.

These temporary emergency militia units were created in response to the success of the Confederate armies in the south (e.g. Fredericksburg, December 1862, and Chancellorsville, May 1863) in anticipation of a possible invasion of Pennsylvania within a short time. These were state level militia, not attached directly to the Union army, which means that the Civil War soldier database does not include a record of his service.
