These temporary emergency militia units were created in response to the success of the Confederate armies in the south (e.g. Fredericksburg, December 1862, and Chancellorsville, May 1863) in anticipation of a possible invasion of Pennsylvania within a short time. These were state level militia, not attached directly to the Union army, which means that the Civil War soldier database does not include a record of his service.
