Charles Williams Baker

Charles "Charlie" Williams Baker, 93, formerly of Ojai, died Friday, Sept. 9, 2005, in Winnetka, Calif. He was born March 13, 1912, in Williamsport, Ohio, to Eva Williams and Charles Wesley Baker.

His early childhood was spent in Vincennes, Inc., and then his family moved in 1921 to the St. Louis area, where he graduated from Normandy High School in 1929. He met his wife, Hope, at an Episcopal Church youth group in 1933. They married in 1935 and raised their son and daughter in Glendale, a suburb of St. Louis.

During the Depression and after a year of college at Washington University, Mr. Baker left school to work full time for Shell Oil Company. In the late ‘30s, he joined Hester-Bradley, a heating manufacturer's representative firm, as a salesman and remained with them for more than 12 years. In the mid-'50s he became a manufacturer's representative with his own business. Professionally, he was active in the St. Louis Chapter of American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers. He served as secretary, treasurer and vice president and founded a scholarship program while on the board.

In 1966, he and his wife moved to Akron, Ohio, where Mr. Baker worked for Ric-Wil Corporation, a piping systems company he had represented. A few years later, he joined United Sheet Metal in Westerville, Ohio, as their southwest regional sales manager. In 1975, he moved to Los Angeles to open a western regional sales office. Mr. Baker retired in 1977, and he and his wife moved to Ojai.

The couple was always active in their community. During the ‘40s and ‘50s, Mr. Baker was an alderman for six years and building commissioner in Glendale, Mo., and president of the Glendale Civic Association. In Ojai, he served on the Red Cross board, helped at Lake Casitas in the 1984 Olympics, and was a sergeant in the Ojai Valley Volunteer Security Patrol. He also joined his wife in volunteering many hours to the fledgling Second Helpings Thrift Store, now an important source of funding for Help of Ojai. Also active with Help of Ojai's Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Mr. and Mrs. Baker were honored as RSVP's king and queen in 1985. They also participated in many social activities at Mira Valle Mobile Home Park.

Mr. Baker began singing as a boy and was a soprano soloist in the Episcopal St. Louis Christ Church Cathedral Boys Choir, and later sang bass in church choirs, men's quartets and glee clubs. In his 80s, he sang with the Ojai Community Chorus.

Mr. Baker is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Ronald Thompson, of Winnetka, Calif.; his son and daughter-in-law, Chuck and Mirka Baker, of Policka, Czech Republic; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hope Baker.

Visitation will be held Saturday, Oct. 8, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai. A private graveside service will follow at Nordhoff Cemetery.
