Charles marries Adelaide Leonard on June 20, 1883 in Middleboro, Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA. They had no children.
Charles was the Librarian at the Middleboro Public Library from 1883-1884.
Charles marketed himself as "A Specialist in Old Colonial History". In a quarter page advertisement on page 62 of the first issue of "The Massachusetts Magazine" published in January 1908, he states "I have visited over 200 graveyards, copying gravestone inscriptions and have over 18,000 names and dates prior to 1850."
Charles died in 1920. His handwritten cemetery records remained at the Middleboro Public Library, readily available to patrons, but not well known outside of the local area. In 1995, the Middleboro Public Library published "Old Cemeteries of Southeastern Massachusetts: A compilation of records by Charles M Thatcher in the late 1880s". The compilation covers 214 cemeteries in towns throughout Plymouth and Bristol counties.
