Mary Malinda Strother was married to Sumberlin Colman Brown (Civil War veteran) on February 5, 1850, in Wilkinson County, Mississippi. Her second husband was A. W. King, and they married on December 29, 1853, in Adams County, Mississippi.

Mary Malinda was the mother of four children, two of whom were living in 1900. In 1910 she was living with her son William and his family. The following obituary appeared in The Dallas Morning News on April 12, 1913, on page 14:

"Mrs. Malinda King, aged 78, died at her home in West Dallas yesterday. Funeral service will be held at the house at 4 o'clock this afternoon, and burial will be in West Dallas Cemetery. Mrs. King was a native of Mississippi and had been a resident of Dallas County forty years."
