Elmer J. "Bud" Conkins, 75, a lifelong resident of Crookston died on Wednesday evening, February 15, 1995 at the Riverview Hospital in Crookston.
Bud was born on July 8, 1919, in Crookston the son of Elmer L. and Mayme O. Scully Conkins.
He graduated from the Cathedral High School in Crookston and went on to attend St. John's College in Collegeville, Minnesota. During World War II, he served in the Navy on the Battleship New York in both Iwo Jima and In the Pacific Theaters.
After being discharged from the Navy, he married Betty Peterson on December 15, 1945 in Cambridge, Maryland. The couple lived all of their married lives in Crookston. Bud worked for the Crookston Granite Company, Great Northern and Northern Pacific Railroad, the Arizona Water Company and eventually the Crookston Water Department, retiring from there in 1986. He entered the Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home in May of 1993.
He was a member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, and was a life member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the American Legion, the MCCL, the AARP, and was also instrumental in establishing the first ice plant in Crookston. He also coached the VFW Bantam hockey team for several years.
Survivors include his wife, three daughters, Jennifer Pederson, St. Cloud, Barbara Anderson and Anmari Conkins, both of Crookston; five sons, Bruce, Moorhead, Gregory, Duluth, Gary, Devils Lake, Brian, Minneapolis and Jerome, San Antonio; 15 grandchildren, a step grandson; and two sisters, Eleanor Munn, Crookston, Dorthy Browne, Magella, California.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Erin Conkins and a brother, Everett.
