READFIELD - Gladys L. "Nana" Cushing, 87, of Readfield died Saturday, April 11, 2009, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Gray Birch, in Augusta. She was born in Enfield, Mass., on July 25, 1921, the daughter of Omar and Mabel (Richardson) Downing. She grew up in Enfield and Amherst and eventually graduated from high school in Amherst.
She married Lawrence Cushing and they lived in several places, including Utah, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and, eventually, Maine.
Gladys was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence; her son, Roger E. Cushing; and her three sisters, Evelyn Lynch, Muriel Ames and Ruth Callahan.
She is survived by her sons, Patrick Cushing, of Mount Dora, Fla., and Lawrence C. Cushing Jr., of Readfield; her daughter, Muriel A. Cushing, of Readfield; her special friend and adopted son, John Pottle; along with 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Burial will be at Readfield Corner Cemetery. (Kennebec Journal 4/22/2009)
